Lake Eyasi

Lake Eyasi is a remote and culturally fascinating destination in northern Tanzania, situated within the Great Rift Valley southwest of the Ngorongoro area. Unlike the famous safari parks of northern Tanzania, Lake Eyasi provides a combination of dramatic landscapes, traditional communities and opportunities for cultural exploration. The lake is a shallow, seasonal saline lake whose size and water levels can change significantly between the rainy and dry seasons. The area is characterized by hot conditions, rugged terrain and the dramatic geological features of the Rift Valley. The greatest attraction of Lake Eyasi is its cultural heritage. The region is home to the Hadzabe, Datoga and other communities. Visitors can experience traditional ways of life, learn about local food gathering and hunting traditions, observe traditional crafts and gain an insight into communities whose lifestyles remain closely connected to the surrounding environment. The Hadzabe are particularly well known for their hunter-gatherer traditions. Cultural visits should be arranged through responsible local guides. Lake Eyasi works particularly well as a cultural extension to a northern Tanzania safari, especially when combined with Ngorongoro, Tarangire or Serengeti.
