DESTINATIONS

Ngorongoro Conservation Area

A wildlife amphitheatre and cradle of humankind.

ABOUT

Ngorongoro

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is one of Tanzania's most important natural and cultural destinations. Located in the northern highlands, it covers approximately 809,440 hectares and contains an extraordinary combination of volcanic landscapes, grasslands, forests, wildlife and archaeological sites. At the centre of the area is the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater, the world's largest intact volcanic caldera. Its enclosed environment contains permanent water sources and fertile grasslands that support a high concentration of wildlife. Visitors may encounter lions, elephants, buffalo, zebras, wildebeest, gazelles, hippos and other species. The area is also important for the conservation of the endangered black rhinoceros. Ngorongoro is much more than a wildlife destination. Olduvai Gorge and Laetoli have produced important evidence relating to human evolution, and the conservation area remains a multiple-use landscape where wildlife conservation exists alongside traditional pastoral activities.
