Nyerere

Nyerere National Park is one of Tanzania's largest and most distinctive wildlife destinations, covering more than 30,000 square kilometres in southern Tanzania. The park was created from the northern photographic sector of the former Selous Game Reserve and is named after Tanzania's founding president, Julius Nyerere. Many international travelers still know the destination by the Selous name. The defining feature of Nyerere is the Rufiji River, together with its connected lakes, channels, floodplains and surrounding woodland. This extensive water system creates an ecosystem very different from the dry open plains found in many northern safari parks. The Rufiji makes it possible to experience wildlife from a boat, which is one of Nyerere's signature attractions. The park is also home to lions, elephants, buffalo, leopards, hyenas and the highly sought-after African wild dog. Its wetlands and river channels support excellent birdlife, including fish eagles, kingfishers, bee-eaters and other water-associated species. Nyerere offers a combination of game drives, boat safaris, walking experiences and bird watching.
